Cheryl, you can purchase a copy of "Street Whys" directly from Ed Ford (his phone number is in the telephone book; he doesn't have an e-mail address) or from the museum store at the Friends of Historic Kingston (open week-ends in the summer I believe from 1 to 4) or probably from most local book stores.

This is a valuable professionally done explanation... quite generous... thank you for your civic contribution! This work and its quality is rare if not unique in civic discourse in most any town, and wanted and needed in Kingston.

I wish you could bring this type of project to every Elementary and Middle School in the Kingston district. Children learn so well through hands on experiences. It completely supports the common core and the plant science curriculum, culinary opportunities and mathematical experiences. Not to mention they get fresh air and it is just healthy for them to get in touch with their food source for vegetables and fruits. I hope more moms and dads, men and women will share their skills with the youth of Kingston our community would be changed through this type of mentorship. Thanks for this upbeat blog.

Here is a link to an NPR program on How Children Learn and a NY Times article on the effect of expectation on student performance... https://www.facebook.com/groups/281070365286637/permalink/420300524696953/?comment_id=420304291363243&offset=0&total_comments=3
These are new and impressive studies. What's more, they have an intuitive feel to them: we can feel that our own performance is improved when people act in a polite and supportive way towards us... don't our children deserve that? They are so vulnerable to the way the are held in the light of others.

One of the most significant features of Montessori is that it actually teaches good behavior, working well with others, social skills... so much of school is about everything else and indeed, so much of society is about everything else... all the work we have to do to deal with lack of civility, a rudeness to society, a unruliness. A Montessori student is noticeably different... my son in law noticed that in my grand daughter and he loved it! He loved going into the school where they kids talked with him were comfortable, exchanged information... they weren't treated like inferior incomplete humans and they didn't have that feeling about themselves... we certainly love it when our kids are comfortable, appropriately confident, polite, and can speak their thoughts, contribute... it is absolutely brilliant that GW is Montessori... I can understand that not everyone is familiar with Montessori, but I promise you it has gained great respect around the world... and it ought to be a matter of great pride for the city of Kingston... My grandson in Colorado goes to a Montessori school, a new one that Denver built a couple of years ago... and yep, the kids are fabulous, as are the parents. Be very proud and grateful...
