Each year, Lydia DeJohnette organizes benefit concerts that feature her husband, the legendary Jack DeJohnette, in a series of concerts to raise money in support of the Queens Galley, Family of Woodstock and other local endeavors through live music. This year, the group will perform at Falcon Arts in Marlboro, NY as well as the Culinary Institute of America.

Kingston, NY — Legendary drummer Jack DeJohnette’s Annual Benefit Concerts in Woodstock to benefit local non-profits takes flight this summer with three spectacular nights of music in nearby Marlboro and Hyde Park, about an hour-and-half from New York City.
Spearheaded by DeJohnette, his friends and fellow Hudson Valley-area residents – guitar masters John Scofield and Larry Coryell, premier tenor saxophonist Joe Lovano and in-demand bassist Larry Grenadier – will perform together in a series of benefit concert for The Queens Galley, a Kingston, NY–based non-profit organization that provides awareness, education, relief and prevention of food insecurity in America.
First up is Friday, August 27th with Larry Coryell and Larry Grenadier at The Falcon in Marlboro, NY, about 70 miles north of New York City. Next night at The Falcon, on Saturday, August 28th, is with John Scofield, Joe Lovano, and Larry Grenadier. In keeping with The Falcon’s philosophy, suggested donation is at $30, with all proceeds going directly to benefit The Queens Galley.
Finally, on Saturday, September 18, is a musical and culinary extravaganza sponsored by The Culinary Institute of America (CIA)’s Students for Advanced Career Experience and Women Chefs and Restauranteurs in Hyde Park, NY. The CIA’s award-winning student chefs will showcase their talent that highlights the food of the Hudson Valley with a seven-course farm-to-table tasting menu dinner with the artists before the concert ($200) and cocktails and hors d’oeuvres under the stars ($75) for general admission.
It may be summertime, but the living is not easy for many people who are finding it harder and harder to figure out where their next meal is coming from. Food pantries and soup kitchens are struggling to keep up with demand, even as government funding is cut to the bone. According to Diane Reeder, Founder and Director of The Queens Galley and a student at The CIA, “we serve about 9000 meals per month and have seen an increase of 37% compared to this time last year. In August, we will see an additional spike because of children not in school who would normally have access to free or reduced price lunches and families will struggle with putting food on the table and gathering back to school supplies.”
The Queens Galley prepares each meal from scratch, with the assistance of volunteer chefs, culinary students and professionals as well as dedicated community members. The Queens Galley is also more than a soup kitchen – they create and implements programs that teach children and families how to make nutritious meals on a limited budget. As a privately funded organization, they welcome anyone in need of assistance, without proof of poverty, and must rely on private donations and support from local residents and businesses.
Edward Kopp, President of The CIA’s Students for Advanced Career Experience notes, “September 18th is Yom Kippur, the end of the Jewish High Holy days and the Day of Atonement. It is also a day of fasting, which seems very appropriate for a benefit to help feed those in need.” One of the selected songs scheduled to be played by DeJohnette, Scofield, Lovano and Grenadier is John Coltrane’s “A Love Supreme,” which Kopp notes is “a very spiritual song for such a spiritual day.”

About Jack DeJohnette: Grammy-award winner Jack DeJohnette is widely regarded as one of jazz music’s greatest drummers. He has collaborated with most major figures in jazz history, such as: John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Ornette Coleman, Sonny Rollins, Sun Ra, Jackie McLean, Thelonious Monk, Bill Evans, Stan Getz, Chet Baker, George Benson, Charles Lloyd, Herbie Hancock, Joe Henderson, Freddie Hubbard, Abbey Lincoln, Betty Carter and Eddie Harris, who is responsible for convincing DeJohnette to stick with drums. About John Scofield: John Scofield, one of the “big three” of current jazz guitarists, is a masterful jazz improviser whose music generally falls somewhere between post-bop, funk edged jazz, and R & B. After a debut recording with Gerry Mulligan and Chet Baker, Scofield was a member of the Billy Cobham-George Duke band for two years and in 1977 he recorded with Charles Mingus, and joined the Gary Burton quartet. He began his international career as a bandleader and recording artist in 1978. From 1982-1985, Scofield toured and recorded with Miles Davis. Since then, he has prominently led his own groups in the international Jazz scene, recorded over 30 albums as a leader, including collaborations with contemporary favorites like Pat Metheny, Charlie Haden, Eddie Harris, Medeski, Martin & Wood, Bill Frisell, Brad Mehldau, Mavis Staples, Government Mule, Jack DeJohnette, Joe Lovano and Phil Lesh. About Larry Coryell: Larry Coryell, one of the world’s acknowledged guitar masters, has recorded more than 75 albums over the past 40 years as a bandleader, soloist and ‘featured accompanist’. Hailed by his legion of fans as one of “the guitar gods” in the late 1970s and as a “truly Renaissance musician who excels at all styles of playing”, he has also been christened as “a true pioneer of rock-jazz fusion” by the New York Times, and dubbed “the Godfather of Fusion” by DownBeat. From late 60’s through early 70’s, Larry has toured with Jack Bruce and was featured in sessions with Jimmy Webb, the 5th Dimension, Charles Mingus, Billy Cobham, Chick Corea and John McLaughlin. In 1974 Larry formed The 11th House, the most popular and successful Fusion band of its time; after it disbanded, Larry was signed by Clive Davis for Arista Records, where he made a series of solo albums, followed by a direct-to-disc recording with the Brecker Brothers. About Joe Lovano: Jazz saxophonist Joe Lovano was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and began playing alto saxophone as a child. He attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston and his early professional gigs were as a sideman with organists Lonnie Smith, Brother Jack McDuff, and Woody Herman Thundering Herd. After settling in New York City, where he eventually joined the Mel Lewis Orchestra for its regular Monday night concert at the Village Vanguard, playing from 1980 to 1992 and recording six albums with the Orchestra. Lovano joined the Paul Motian band in 1981 and has since worked and collaborated with John Scofield, Herbie Hancock, Elvin Jones, Charlie Haden, Carla Bley, Bobby Hutcherson, Billy Higgins, Dave Holland, Ed Blackwell, Michel Petrucciani, Lee Konitz, Abbey Lincoln, Tom Harrell, McCoy Tyner, Ornette Coleman, Jim Hall, Bob Brookmeyer and many more. In recent years, he has collaborated with two other premier tenor saxophonists of his generation, Dave Liebman and the late Michael Brecker, in the collective Saxophone Summit. About Larry Grenadier : Larry was born into a musical family in San Francisco, Californa. In the early 1990’s, Larry first met and played with pianist Brad Mehldau. Brad’s trio that included Larry and Jorge Rossy went on to become one of the major groups of the time. Also during this time Larry played in John Scofield’s band and with Pat Metheny with whom he spent a few years touring with the guitarist in a trio with drummer Bill Stewart. Other musicians Larry played with included Charles Lloyd, Billy Higgins, Michael Brecker, and Paul Motian. He is a part of the collaborative trio FLY which includes drummer Jeff Ballard and tenor saxophonist Mark Turner. They have recorded two critically acclaimed albums, the latest one being on the ECM label. Larry is a resident of the Hudson Valley, where he lives with his wife Rebecca and their son, Charlie James.
